News Update Presidential daughter's bro-in-law shot by carjackers

A brother-in-law of presidential daughter Luli Arroyo-Bernas was repeatedly shot after trying to resist four men who stole his van Saturday morning in Pasig City. Senior Supt. Jessie Cardona, Pasig police chief, identified the victim as Jorge Bernas, 41, a businessman, of Greenmeadows Subdivision, Quezon City. He is the brother of John Aloysius Bernas, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's son-in-law. The victim, who reportedly bore two bullet wounds in the abdomen and one in the left arm, was declared to be in stable condition by physicians at the Medical City also in Pasig as of Saturday afternoon. Information gathered by case prober PO3 Orlando Lipata of the local police station revealed that the incident occurred at 5 a.m. while Bernas and his family were cruising along C-5 Road onboard a Hyundai Starex Van (ZLE-801). According to Lipata, Bernas was with his wife Jo Analise, 42; their children Arianne, 12, Antonio, 11, their houseboy and driver. The family had just come from the airport and was on their way home when a Hi-Ace van bumped the right rear of the Starex upon reaching the Ortigas Avenue in Barangay Ugong, Pasig. Bernas and his driver alighted to check the damage of their vehicle when four gunmen stepped out of the Hi-Ace van and declared a hold-up. When the victim resisted and shouted for help, the gunmen shot him three times. The armed men then commandeered the Starex, bringing along with them Bernas's wife and children. A driver of a passenger jeep brought Bernas and his driver to the hospital while the gunmen left Bernas's family at the corner of EDSA and Estrella Street in Makati City, Lipata said. Meanwhile, the Eastern Police District (EPD) has formed a task force that would focus on solving the case and bringing the carjackers to justice. Senior Supt. Mario Soriano, EPD's deputy director for operations, will head Task Force Bernas. The task group is set to review footage from the closed-circuit television camera (CCTV) installed near the place of the crime.
