News Update Classes suspended in Metro Manila, nearby provinces

MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Education (DepEd) suspended classes today in pre-school, elementary and high school in Metro Manila and other areas due to inclement weather.

Kenneth Tirado of the DepEd-Public Information Office said that the declaration covers public and prive schools. He said that the declaration of class suspensions was based on recommendations from state-run weather bureau PAGASA.

PAGASA said that Metro Manila and other parts of Luzon will experience heavy rains due to typhoon "Kabayan" and a low pressure area spotted (LPA) near Sinait, Ilocos Sur.

PAGASA acting chief Graciano Yumul said that heavy rains will continue in Metro Manila until 10 a.m. today.

Tirado said that aside from Metro Manila, classes in some parts of Calabarzon (Region 4A) were also suspended. These areas include classes in Calamba City; San Mateo, and Rodriguez, Rizal; and Rosario, Cavite.

Classes in from pre-school to highschool levels have also been suspended in some parts of Bulacan and Pampanga province.

Meanwhile, several colleges in Metro Manila also suspended classes including:

Informatics College - Manila
Arellano University
St. Mary's College in Quezon City
Samson College

Meanwhile, PAGASA reported that typhoon Kabayan has slightly weakened as it slowly made its way to the Philippine Sea.

As of 4 a.m., the typhoon's eye was estimated at 1,120 kilometers east northeast of Basco, Batanes, packing maximum sustained winds of 165 kph and gusts of of up to 200 kph.

PAGASA said Kabayan is expected to move northwest at 13 kph.
