BAGUIO CITY, BENGUET- The Mayat-an family maintains their Igorot tradition through woven bags made with traditional cloth and wild bamboo.
Mayat-an Handicrafts was established by Rovilyn Mayat-an 16 years ago not only for profit but also to help their fellow Igorots in Baguio with unique talents on weaving.
The whole family is also involved with the whole operation of the small business.
According to Ruby Anne Mayat-an, daughter of Rovilyn, although many of the traditions and even the use of costumes are now fading due to modernization, the family tries to preserve Igorot culture by continuously weaving traditional designs.
“Our creations can reach many places and since they are made from our traditional woven tapis and wild bamboo (pinga), people are reminded of Igorot tradition wherever they are,” Ruby Anne said.
Ruby Anne said that wild bamboo is really strong as compared to other bags that may look similar to their creations. Some of the bags can carry heavy loads like laptops and books making them ideal for students.
She said the weavers also have a touch of modernity to fit the lifestyle of those who are living in the cities. Most of the designs came from her and from the suggestions of loyal customers.
“These bags are also ideal for those who want to know about our heritage while it can bring nostalgia to those who have left Baguio. They may have a piece of Igorot culture by simply carrying this bag,” she said.
