News Update Philippine prosecutors to summon ex-president

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Philippine prosecutors are summoning former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and 35 other people for a preliminary investigation into complaints they rigged elections in 2007.

Prosecutor General Claro Arellano said Monday that the summons will be sent to Arroyo, her husband Jose Miguel Arroyo, and other former officials for a Nov. 3 hearing.

Two complaints of electoral sabotage have been filed against them. Arroyo is accused of conspiring with officials in tampering with election returns to favor her candidates at a time when she was battling impeachment.

During her nine years in office, Arroyo survived several coup attempts by disgruntled soldiers and impeachment bids by the opposition, who accused her of corruption, election fraud and human rights abuses.
