ILOILO City has 13,000 poor households or some 52,000 poor individuals, posting less than three percent below the poverty threshold from its some 500,000 population.
The regional poverty situationer in Western Visayas was based in surveys completed in February 2011, and reported during the database launching of the National Household Targeting System for Poverty Reduction (NHTS-PR) held in this city last October 3, 2011.
The NHTS-PR is set to get the actual number of families vulnerable to risk as a continuing poverty data in the region. These figures were the basis of the NHTS-PR in identifying the households living below the poverty threshold in the region.
The report showed the regional poverty threshold set by the National Statistical Coordinating Board in 2006 is P14,405 per person per year, while the regional subsistence or food threshold is P9,962 per person per year.
The report also showed that the province of Negros Occidental and Iloilo City have the most number of poor households in the region.
The National Statistics Office 2007 census showed 986,640 households were assessed out of the 1,396,505 households in the region. A total of 385,516 households were identified as living below the poverty threshold - this consists of 42,262 poor families and 2,339,182 poor individuals. (Lydia C. Pendon)
