News Update Philippines Vegetable shortage feared

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet - Governor Nestor Fongwan is seeing a shortage of several vegetables.
Fongwan said there will be a shortage of snap beans, lettuce and green pepper these days because of the two typhoons which hit Benguet the past weeks.
However, he said farmers in the province will have an easier recovery because these varieties grow fast and are easy to plant.
Rains ruined the crops with initial damages pegged at P40 million.
As of now, there is an adequate supply of vegetables in the Trading Post - ready to supply the usual markets in the country. Benguet supplies 70 percent of the national vegetable needs.
During the previous storms, consumers opted to buy canned goods over fresh produce due to the rains and floods in the lowlands.
Benguet’s leading agricultural activity is still vegetable production.
Major crops produced are white potatoes, beans, peas, strawberries, cabbage, lettuce and, carrots.
