News Update Philippine

KALIBO, Aklan, Philippines (PIA) - Aklan's provincial government continues to sustain Aklan's universal program for PhilHealth. Governor Carlito S. Marquez, with Representatives Florencio T. Miraflores and Teodorico Haresco are working to expand PhilHealth's Universal Coverage, which, Marquez said "is designed to provide coverage for Aklanons not included in the regular program with the provincial government complementing 30 percent of premiums and the municipality takes care of the 70 percent." Philhealth-Aklan has 24,352 members enrolled under Miraflores' sponsorship.

SBM Implementer

EB MAGALONA, Negros Occidental (PIA) - Enrique B. Magalona Elementary School principal Angeles Verdeprado was named one of the best School Based Management (SBM) implementers in the country. Verdeprado received a certificate of recognition from Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Armin Luistro and DepEd Region VI Director Mildred Garay during the first School Based Management National Assembly held at the Pavilion Hotel in Bacolod City, recently. She was cited for selflessly sharing her insights and experience on effective SBM practices with her school.

Sand Seized

DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental (PIA) - A joint team from the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (ENRO) and the Provincial Environment Natural Resources Division (ENRD) seized 90 illegally collected sacks of sand from the Banica River here. Dumaguete City ENRD Officer Dick Encabo said his team and the ENRD went to the site after receiving a report on said activities along and near the spillway of Barangays Taclobo and Bagacay. Upon the arrival of the team, the illegal extractors hastily left the area, Encabo said.

Restoring Gabaldons

CEBU CITY, Cebu - Over P50,000, including cash donations, was raised during the two-week display of paintings dubbed Mugna-Lambigit exhibit at SM City Cebu. Initiated by the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. (RAFI) along with the Cebu Provincial Government, and Cebu Artists Inc. (CAI), Mugna-Lambigit showcased the historical and cultural beauty of the Gabaldon school buildings built during the American era which are now considered heritage structures. "Gabaldons are significant because they symbolize the start of our formal public education system in the country and manifest 'intelligent design', meaning they are functional, beautiful, and totally attuned to the environment,"said RAFI deputy director for operations Amaya Aboitiz. Biliran Safe

NAVAL, Biliran (PIA) - Despite continuous week-long rains in Biliran, provincial agriculturist Jaime G. Casas, said agricultural products here remain safe. "No farmer here has reported of any damage on farm and farm products as of this date. Casas said although rains had been pouring for over a week now, there has been no heavy downpour nor strong winds to cause damage to farms or to farm products. Rice plants are not yet susceptible to damage with this type of rains because rice are still in their vegetation and maximum tillering stages.
