MANILA (AFP) - Five people were killed and three more wounded as an attempt to waylay a bank delivery turned into a bloody running gun battle in a central Philippines shopping mall on Monday, a police official said.
A bank teller and two security guards were delivering a bag of money in the shopping centre in the trading and holiday city of Cebu when three armed robbers attacked them, shooting the guards dead, said the city police chief.
Policemen rushed to the scene and pursued the gunmen, eventually cornering them, leading to a shootout that killed the three robbers, said police chief Senior Superintendent Melvin Buenafe.
'The robbers were waiting inside the mall and that is where the shooting started. But our policemen chased them and they shot the suspects,' he told reporters.
