ANILA, Philippines – Retired Brigadier General Danilo Lim refused on Monday to admit guilt for alleged wrongdoings he committed during the Arroyo administration. Lim, who was detained at the Camp Crame from 2006 to 2010 for rebellion charges and attempted coup d’etat, said admitting guilt would clear former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, her relatives, and officials who served in her government. “This admission of guilt, they say, is a necessary precondition before I could avail myself of amnesty. I have repeatedly stated that I will not admit guilt and/or responsibility to alleged crimes I have not been proven guilty,” he said in a press statement. “Such a demand only distracts the country from prosecuting the real enemies of democracy and the people,” he added. He alleged that Arroyo is now scot-free with the help of Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez.
“It is they who must admit to their crimes. Thus, as part of the task and mandate given by the people to the new democratic government, it is incumbent on President Benigno Simeon "Noynoy Aquino III that these people account for their transgressions. Punish the true enemies of the people and not those who stood with them during their great hour of need, despite the odds and difficulties,” Lim said. “The Filipino people deserve no less.”
