News Update QCPD creates new anti-car theft unit

MANILA, Philippines – The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) announced on Wednesday the creation of its District Anti-Carnapping Unit (DACU) that will respond to cases and incidents of car theft in the city.

According to QCPD Director, Chief Superintendent Benjardi Mantele, DACU paves the way for the creation of a larger and tougher anti-carnapping unit from its former section of the District Police Intelligence Operation Unit (DPIOU).

Mantele said the unit will be headed by a police superintendent with a police chief inspector as his deputy. It shall be composed of 6 teams with 7 members each to be led by a police inspector.

To reinforce the unit, Motorized Anti-Street Crime Operatives (MASCO), a platoon of uniformed motorcycle-riding policemen under the District Public Safety Battalion (DPSB) will also be re-aligned under DACU.

He added that each of the 12 police stations will establish their respective station anti-carnapping sections, consisting of 3 police non-commissioned officers who shall be directly under the control and supervision of the deputy chief of DACU.

DACU is part of QCPD’s continuing projects and latest anti-criminality strategy. Its primary responsibility is to conduct relentless anti-carnapping operations to neutralize organized and syndicated groups involved in carnapping and carjacking activities.

It shall also formulate action plans as well as case operational plans and conduct pro-active measures in the prevention of carnapping and carjacking incidents.

Moreover, DACU shall also help intensify public information and dissemination by providing anti-carnapping tips and present modus operandi of carnapping syndicates.

Meanwhile, Mentale called on the public to help the police in the fight against criminal elements, especially those involved in carnapping.

The involvement of the community and the vigilance of the people will certainly be a big factor and deterrence against incidents of car theft, Mantele said. -- report from Dennis Datu, radio dzMM
