DID YOU KNOW THAT ? Cagsawa ruins, Philippine

Over 700 people lost their lives, but the true figure may never be known. ...The Cagsawa ruins survived. It's easy to fall under the spell of beauty and charisma. It is no doubt this attraction which continues to draw people to her fertile slopes - the very slopes which became their death-trap when Reming came-a-calling.

Millions of tons of volcanic ash, compounded by heavy rain, were dislodged. Boulders as huge as juggernauts rolled with unstoppable force down onto the neighbouring villages. The people perished. The landscape resembles a moonscape. It is a grim grey carpet, a lahar, which envelopes all before it and will take years to reclaim.

Yet it was not due to a volcanic eruption which caused this havoc. It was because there was nothing to prevent the landslide. Mayon is being plundered for her assets and resources.

If she was hiding behind her veil it was because she has been violated and dishonoured. Slowly being stripped, abused and exploited. She's been threatening to blow her top lately. Who could blame her?the picture of the mighty mayon volcano with the cagsawa ruins on its side is etched in my mind since my elementary days. i remember it in the history books that i never liked, in post cards and in charts hung on my classrooms' walls. There may be a moment or two in my life that i told myself, i'm surely gonna be seeing the actual grandeur of mayon and the wonders of cagsawa ruins.
