News Update Roxas Blvd murder suspect committed suicide, MPD insists

MANILA, Philippines - Manila police investigators yesterday insisted that the Chinese man who was arrested for killing his girlfriend had committed suicide.
“It’s suicide. He really committed suicide. He grabbed the policeman’s gun. There is no other explanation,” Manila Police District homicide section chief Senior Inspector Joselito de Ocampo told The STAR.“Some malicious minds just think otherwise.”
Gong Shu Yang, 26, was arrested last Thursday night, days after he ran over and repeatedly stabbed his lover, 24-year-old Zhao Chun Lan, along Roxas Boulevard last month. The killing was caught on video by a surveillance camera installed at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.
Police said Gong grabbed the service firearm of one of his escorts when the latter bent over to pick up some documents, while he was being transported to City Hall to undergo inquest.
Police said Gong then put the gun under his chin and pulled the trigger.
De Ocampo said they are still waiting for the Philippine National Police headquarters to release the official results of the paraffin test on Gong and his police escorts – SPO1 Charles John Duran, PO3 Alonzo Layugan and PO2 Jason Ibaco.
MPD investigators are also waiting for the result of the gunpowder examination on the body of Gong.
Police released last Tuesday a statement by a Chinese witness who overheard Gong talking to his sister following his arrest, indicating that he would commit suicide. - By Sandy Araneta
