News Update Escapee falls after 17 years

KIDAPAWAN CITY -- A fugitive, who escaped in 1995 from Davao Penal Colony (Dapecol) in Davao City, was arrested by police in a remote village in Arakan town in North Cotabato on Sunday, police reports said.

Chief Inspector Joeffrey Todenio, chief of the Arakan Municipal Police Office, identified the fugitive who was arrested in Barangay Katipunan as Cristituto Tan.

Katipunan, the farthest village in Arakan town, is located at the boundary of Davao City and North Cotabato.

Tan is sentenced to life imprisonment for a homicide case, which happened some 17 years ago.

Todenio said based on records, Tan escaped from Dapecol last June 11, 1995 and sought refuge at a relative's place in Barangay Katipunan, Arakan.

"Tan lived like a normal person in the village for 17 years. Until one day, one of the residents in the area gave us a tip of his presence," Todenio said.

Tan is temporarily placed under the custody of Arakan police. He will be sent back to the Dapecol anytime this week, according to Todenio.
