Kopi Talk Bishops should not accept donations from gov'

Yahoo! Philippines readers are one in saying that Catholic Bishops should not accept any donations from government.

This was the unanimous position of those who joined a recent Yahoo! Philippines poll, which asked readers whether these highly respected members of the society should even accept donations from government.

Close to 20,000 (70) voted "no" while more than 6,000 readers (24%) said "yes," the Yahoo! Philippines poll showed.

Catholic Bishops were embroiled in a recent scandal after some members admitted to receiving sports utility vehicles from the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office. These were donations given during the time when former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo was still in power.

This week, the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines decided to apologize and are now facing probe at the Senate. They stressed that the donated vehicles were intended to help the poor.

Meanwhile, some Catholic Bishops have asked Arroyo speak on the scandal, hoping she could shed more light on the matter.

As the investigations unfold, more Catholic Bishops are admitting to accepting donations from the embattled Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office, which operates the state-run lotteries.
