Mirinae hits Philippines

Oct 31, 2009 Typhoon Mirinae smashed into the Philippines overnight, but has weakened after hitting the eastern province of Quezon. -- PHOTO: AP MANILA - TYPHOON Mirinae smashed into the Philippines overnight, washing away a bridge, causing power outages and dumping fresh rain on areas still flooded after recent killer storms, officials said on Saturday. There have been no reports of fatalities but one man is missing after his hut was washed away by floodwaters, said civil defence spokesman Ernesto Torres. One person was rescued after a bridge in Batangas City just south of Manila was destroyed by a swollen river, taking at least one car with it, local officials said. It was not yet clear if anyone was missing from the incident. Electricity supplies were also interrupted in parts of Manila and in surrounding areas as the storm toppled power lines and trees, rendering some roads impassable, Torres said. All international and local flights to and from Manila were cancelled, said airport general manager Alfonso Cusi. He said he hoped flights would resume once the storm had passed. Mirinae weakened after hitting the eastern province of Quezon at midnight as it crossed the main Philippine island of Luzon, moving west towards the South China Sea. -- AFP

Internet turns 40

TECHNOLOGY and media stars, pundits, and entrepreneurs joined the Internet's father on Thursday to celebrate the 40th anniversary of his culture-changing child. 'It's the 40th year since the infant Internet first spoke,' said University of California, Los Angeles, professor Leonard Kleinrock, who headed the team that first linked computers online in 1969. Kleinrock led an anniversary event at the UCLA campus that blended reminiscence of the Internet's past with debate about its future. 'There is going to be an ongoing controversy about where we have been and where we are going,' said Arianna Huffington, co-founder of the popular news and blog website that bears her name. 'It is not just about the Internet; it is about our times. We are going to need desperately to tap into the better angels of our nature and make our lives not just about ourselves but about our communities and our world.' -- AFP

Kopi Talk - A Union made in Heaven and Earth

Filipino wedding receptions are not so different from traditional Chinese wedding receptions. At the entry, they have reception to collect money. However, there are also some unique ceremony incorporated into the Filipino celebration from the money dance which aims to give the married couple a prosperous start by approaching either the bride or groom and, using scotch tape, place any number of bills that you wish onto the happy couple’s clothing. Pins were traditionally used to attach the money, but many brides prefer that their gown not be pinned. The dance can continue for as long as the couple wants or until guests stop approaching the couple. As for the dove releasing ceremony.
The bride should gently take the female dove out of the cage and hold it while the groom does the same with the male dove. Then the couple should motion towards each other, bringing the doves’ beaks together as if to make the birds kiss. Then the couple releases the doves at the same time in a gesture that represents the start of a harmonious marriage
representing a harmonious and loving union, Filipino wedding traditions may seem unusual to some, but if you look a little deeper you will learn to appreciate the heart-felt symbolism especially when it held in a village as most of the neighbor one way or another to participate in the wedding either in cooking chores or even hand made ceremonial props.

10 Tips To Make Working From Home More Productive

Working from home is a great thing, no doubt about it. You can wear what you want. Keep you own hours. Eat and drink when you want. Surf the net without feeling like your boss is going to bust you. You don’t have to worry about commuting and all of the stress associated with bumper to bumper traffic. No annoying bosses to deal with anymore and you can take breaks when it suits you. In short, you control your own destiny. All of those things are fantastic pros to owning your own business and working from home. However, there is a dark side. There is the tendency to get sidetracked from the work that generates a profit and puts food on your table to the work you would maybe rather do at the moment like build that deck in your back yard, work on your car, or ugh…do the laundry. There is also the tendency to lose track of time researching for your business or taking care of tasks that may be better suited for a different time or even handled by a different person. All of these sidetracks, and many more, will take away from your daily productivity and essentially end up affecting your bottom line. Here are 10 tips to help you stay on track and heading toward the profits you desire and deserve. 1. Organize everything. Having a system in place for your business, your home office, and your work time is essential to remain focused and productive. Develop a system of organizing your office files and your computer files. Make sure there is a place for everything including the stuff you got in the mail today. Some common file categories are:
 Expenses
 Bank accounts
 Receipts Customer files
 Contracts Payables Receivables
 Taxes Business entity documentation
 Marketing Copywriting ideas
On your computer it is often helpful to have a folder for every major aspect of your business with separate smaller folders contained inside if necessary. For example you could have a taxes folder on your computer with separate tax information stored in sub folders by date. Al l the tax information and documentation for each year would be stored in that year’s folder. The important thing to remember when developing a system of organization is to make sure that it is a system that will work for you, your business, lifestyle and needs. If it doesn’t you wont use it and it won’t do you any good. 2. Plan. Some people are planners and others are doers. To be a successful business owner, you have to be both. You have to plan it and then you have to do it. Plan your business, plan your year, plan your month, plan your week, plan your day. Task lists and project management systems are great tools for the day to day, month to month type planning. For longer range annual planning you will want to go back to your business plan and review, revise, and reassess it annually. Goals are much easier achieved if you set out a plan to achieve them. This includes the small daily goals like calling that contact about that new joint venture idea you have. I’m sure you have already heard this, but good goals are measurable, relevant, timely, and attainable. 3. To do lists. To do lists or task lists as we talked about in #2 are essential to keep you on task and focused on your goal. Task lists also help keep you organized and they help you prioritize your day. If you’re like me, then they help to motivate you too. There’s something satisfying about crossing an item off of your task list, and conversely something terrifying about watching that task list grow and grow while doing nothing to shorten it and keep it under control. 4. Automate what you can. One of the fantastic things about working from home and owning an online business is that there are so many wonderful tools available to help make our lives easier. There are autoresponders and electronic shopping carts. Web tracking statistics and article submission software programs. Heck, there are even task list programs that will email you your task list for the day! Automating certain tasks will help take the burden off of your shoulders and free up your time to spend on more important tasks. 5. Keep real hours. One of the pitfalls of working from home is the tendency to work 12 hours a day. I know you’re thinking no way, I wouldn’t do that, but it happens and your friends, family, and even your pets suffer the consequences. You do too. All work and no play makes ….well you know the rest. Even if you LOVE your job, it is important to step away from it. Keep real hours. 9-5, 8-4, 10-6 it doesn’t matter. Do whatever works best for you and your business but when it comes time to clock out and eat dinner with your family – do it. Work isn’t going anywhere but your family is. 6. Let it go. This goes back to #5. When the horn blows and it’s time to turn off the computer and go to your child’s choir concert, be there with them in the moment. If your mind is at home thinking about the task you didn’t quite finish or the project you’re starting tomorrow, you’re not truly with your child. 7. Track your hours. Tracking the hours you work and the time it takes to accomplish certain tasks can be an eye opening experience. You may find that the copywriting you think is only taking you an hour a day is actually taking you two. You may also find that your administrative tasks are taking significantly less time than you thought they were or that answering emails consumes half of your day. Tracking your time is essential if you want to later determine the value of it. 8. Plan your admin time. Use the time of day that you are most productive for the tasks that are important to your business. You can easily handle your administrative tasks during the time of the day when you’re unable to focus as well or are likely to have more interruptions. 9. Outsource what you can. Since there are only 24 hours in a day and 5 days in a working week, it may not be possible to get everything done. If you can fit it into your budget to outsource some of the more time consuming, and less appealing tasks, it may be worth your while to do so. Particularly if your time would be better spent on tasks that generate revenue. 10. Identify your time stealer. Everyone has time stealer. Some get easily distracted by email. Others find themselves spending too much time networking online or researching. You likely know what your time stealer are. If you don’t track what you do during the workday and how much time you spend doing it. The results will be interesting. Once you know where you’re losing time, you can take measures to eliminate it. For example, if email is stealing your time, schedule checking your email into your task list in the morning, at lunch and near the end of the day. That way you’re not responding to every new email in your inbox. Working from home is a joy but it takes a bit of structure and discipline if you want to be productive. Using these ten tips as guidelines, you’ll be well on your way to a productive, and profitable future. New typhoon to hit Philippines

Oct 29, 2009 MANILA - STORM-WEARY Filipinos were told on Thursday to prepare for another typhoon to hit the main island of Luzon during the upcoming long-weekend holiday, with rain forecast for flood-ravaged Manila. Typhoon Mirinae, already packing gusts of up to 185kmh, was expected to become stronger before it slams into the Philippines on Saturday, the state weather bureau said. Mirinae's expected arrival comes as Luzon is still trying to recover from two devastating storms that claimed more than 1,000 lives. Parts of Manila remain flooded after Tropical Storm Ketsana dumped the heaviest rains in more than four decades on the nation's capital on Sept 26. Typhoon Parma arrived exactly one week later, then hovered over northern Luzon as a tropical storm for nearly 10 days, causing massive flooding and triggering deadly landslides. Weather bureau spokesman Nathaniel Cruz warned that Manila was likely to get more rain, potentially exacerbating the woes for more than one million people still living in flooded districts. The rain also threatens to cause havoc for millions of Filipinos living in cities who are expected to return to their home provinces at the weekend to honour their dead during All Soul's Day on Monday, which is a public holiday. -- AFP

A start and not stuff that make of dream dust !

In Singapore printing or even publishing a book is an expensive affair because of the high operation cost. I have friend who simply love to write and his passion is to publish a book. However, in Sinagpore it was difficult to get a book published. High inventory costs and limited financial resources The other alternative was traditional self-publishing, an often difficult, and expensive proposition for the author. They had to take time off to attend to the tedious tasks involved in publishing their own book: typesetting, lay-outs, registering copyrights, attaining an ISBN number. The most difficult part of all was having to invest a significant amount of money to pay for the large minimum print run. (Printing books with at least 1000 copies to bring the per book costs down to an affordable level) This would often result in money being tied up and a large inventory of books that could take years to sell. The other day I drop him an email to revival his dream to publish his book again and I called it oversea cost effective feasibility analysis publishing. Using bombastic and technical quote, in simplistically mean taking advantage of Singapore high dollar rate conversion in peso, now printing a book considered cheaper and feasible, hope that his first book will be out next year. The publisher quote me about $390 an average expenditure for 1 week average Singaporean for grocery etc. The publisher say "just bring in your friend manuscript and depending on the level and amount of work needed, you can pick and choose from our basic publishing package and optional add-on services. If your manuscript is ready for print you can have your book out within 10 days". His dream now become reality in a making as, as for being the best seller, fame and fortune that MIGHT come later. MANILA - FILIPINOS should avoid visiting cemeteries during this weekend's All Saints' Day celebrations because a new storm threatening the country could trap them there, making rescue difficult, the country's national disaster administrator said on Wednesday.
Millions in the Philippines pay respects to dead relatives on Nov 1 each year, a Roman Catholic tradition.
The country, however, is still struggling to recover from back-to-back storms that killed 929 in floods and landslides and affected more than 9 million people. In some provinces, floodwaters raged through cemeteries, breaking up tombs and sweeping away caskets and bodies.
Forecasters are predicting that a new storm, Typhoon Mirinae, could hit the main island of Luzon on Saturday - the day before the holiday - and again inundate the northern region, said Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro, who leads the National Disaster Coordinating Council.
'Let us avoid visiting our relatives at the cemeteries, and if we really need to make a visit, we can do it earlier - before Saturday,' Teodoro said.
He said visitors 'may be trapped there, or there may be traffic congestion that could delay the response and relief efforts that may have to be done.' -- AP

Kopi Talk - Curry kills cancer cells

IN our restaurant we served Singapore curry chicken, not the best seller, too hot and spicy for local Filipino.
In Singapore we like like hot. However, this is a pieces of good news.

A molecule found in a curry ingredient can kill oesophageal cancer cells in the laboratory, suggesting it might be developed as an anti-cancer treatment, scientists said on Wednesday. -- PHOTO: AP
LONDON - A MOLECULE found in a curry ingredient can kill oesophageal cancer cells in the laboratory, suggesting it might be developed as an anti-cancer treatment, scientists said on Wednesday.
Researchers at the Cork Cancer Research Centre in Ireland treated oesophageal cancer cells with curcumin - a chemical found in the spice turmeric, which gives curries a distinctive yellow colour - and found it started to kill cancer cells within 24 hours. The cells also began to digest themselves, they said in a study published in the British Journal of Cancer.
Previous scientific studies have suggested curcumin can suppress tumours and that people who eat lots of curry may be less prone to the disease, although curcumin loses its anti-cancer attributes quickly when ingested. But Sharon McKenna, lead author of the Irish study, said her study suggested a potential for scientists to develop curcumin as an anti-cancer drug to treat oesophageal cancer.
Cancers of the oesophagus kill more than 500,000 people across the world each year. The tumours are especially deadly, with five-year survival rates of just 12 to 31 per cent. Ms McKenna said the study showed curcumin caused the cancer cells to die 'using an unexpected system of cell messages'.
Normally, faulty cells die by committing programmed suicide, or apoptosis, which occurs when proteins called caspases are 'switched on' in cells, the researchers said.
But these cells showed no evidence of suicide, and the addition of a molecule that inhibits caspases and stops this 'switch being flicked' made no difference to the number of cells that died, suggesting curcumin attacked the cancer cells using an alternative cell signalling system. -- REUTERS

Rebels vow to spare civilians

Oct 28, 2009

MANILA (Philippines) - THE Philippine government and a large Muslim rebel group signed an accord pledging not to target civilians and to protect schools and hospitals, an indication of improving relations after years of conflict, officials said on Wednesday.
The agreement, signed in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, aims to avoid massive civilian suffering in the southern Philippines, where hundreds were killed and more than half a million displaced when peace talks collapsed last year.
Both sides will discuss measures to enforce the accord once formal talks resume later this year, including international monitors, said government negotiator Rafael Seguis.
Displaced civilians have born the brunt of the conflict, which has claimed at least 120,000 lives since the 1970s.
In the agreement signed on Tuesday, both sides committed not to target noncombatants, along with 'schools, hospitals, religious premises, health and food distribution centres, or relief operations.' They also agreed not to block the flow of food aid and other relief goods.
The fighting in the marshy heartland of the southern Mindanao region eased in July and both sides agreed last month to resume the negotiations. -- AP

Mocca Cake is a delight snack at any time, but especially when strewn and smell  with Mocca flavor, the flip side the cake there was not much of filling but the overall packaging  basically confirm compliance with minimum legal regulation :- Selling at Peso 8
A common name or a description which is sufficient to indicate the true nature of the food product should be included a complete list of ingredients used in the food should be declared. If the respective quantities of the ingredients are not disclosed, they should be listed in descending order of the proportions by weight in which they are present. In other words, the ingredients listed at the top of the list should be the one that weighed the most.If the colouring matter, tartrazine is used, it must be stated in the list of ingredients as either "tartrazine", or "colour (102)" or "colour (FD&C Yellow #5)" or similar words. The minimum quantity of the food in the package expressed in terms of volumetric measure (eg. ml, litres) or net weight (eg, g,kg) or any other measure should be printed on the label to indicate the quantity of the contents. In the case of weight measure, suitable words like "Net" shall be used to describe the manner of measure. The name and address of the manufacturer, packer or local vendor should be printed on the label of a food of local origin. In the case of an imported food, the label should indicate the name and address of the local importer, distributor or agent. Telegraphic, facsimile and post office address are not acceptable. The name of the country of origin of the food should be indicated on the label for imported food. The name of a city, town or province alone is not sufficient to indicate the origin of the product. A review on the minimum weight declaration requirement for prepacked foods under the Food Regulations, so as to keep abreast with the latest international guidelines, and ensure consistency in food product weight declaration at the national level..
The Food Regulations currently require prepacked foods to have the minimum quantities of their contents present in the package declared in terms of volumetric measure or net weight in their labels.  However, the weight measures of prepacked goods in general are also governed by the Weights and Measures Act and its Regulations, and these gazettes have been amended to replace the Minimum Quantity System (MQS) with the latest internationally accepted Average Quantity System (AQS).  The Weights and Measures Act and its Regulations are administered by WMO. WMO is now actively promoting adoption of AQS among the local industries. AQS is an internationally recognised system for determining deficiencies in prepacked goods, which provides fairness to packers, manufacturers and consumers. Packers/manufacturers can increase productivity by reducing overfill needed to assure correct quantity. Consumers can be assured that prepacked goods purchased are on average equal to nominal quantity.

Internationally, the AQS has already been adopted by major developed countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Japan, the United States and member states of the European Union.  At the ASEAN level, the AQS concept has also been incorporated in the document entitled “ASEAN Common Requirements of Pre-packaged Products”, which was adopted by the Working Group of ASEAN Consultative Committee on Standards and Quality in August 2007.

Misery for 1.5m after storms

Oct 26, 2009 More than 1.5 million people are struggling to live in flooded suburbs or crowded shelters one month after devastating rains began pounding the Philippines, and officials warn no quick fix is in sight. --PHOTO: REUTERS MANILA - MORE than 1.5 million people are struggling to live in flooded suburbs or crowded shelters one month after devastating rains began pounding the Philippines, and officials warn no quick fix is in sight. The impoverished Southeast Asian nation faces a huge long-term battle to recover from the two storms that claimed at least 929 lives in Manila and other parts of the main Luzon island, the government and relief organisations said. 'The storms and torrential rains... have left the people of the Philippines facing one of the greatest challenges in memory,' the UN's World Food Programme director, Josette Sheeran, said during a weekend visit to Manila. After tropical storm Ketsana dumped the heaviest rains in more than four decades on Manila on September 26, entire districts remain waist-deep in water and piles of flood debris still litter other parts of the capital. In mountain areas of northern Luzon that were pummelled by 10 days of torrential rain from tropical storm Parma which arrived a week after Ketsana, villages remain ghost towns after being hit by landslides. The World Health Organisation says 1.43 million people, mostly in and around Manila, continue to endure a dangerous existence living in flooded districts. Those areas may remain flooded for months because chaotic urban planning has led to natural drainage systems along lakes being blocked. -- AFP

Estrada seeks redemption

Oct 25, 2009
MANILA - RIDING one of the Philippines' iconic 'jeepney' mini-buses used by the poor, Joseph Estrada burst into Manila's dockside slums to begin a seven-month drive aimed at returning him to the presidential palace.
'This is the last performance of my life,' the 72-year-old former movie star told a crowd of about 10,000 fans in his trademark husky voice as he officially launched his election campaign last week.
Elected president by a record margin during the Asian crisis in 1998, but then impeached for massive corruption and toppled in a bloodless military coup in 2001, Estrada is seeking redemption through his unlikely campaign.
To this day he denies having taken bribes from illegal gambling operators, embezzling millions of dollars in tobacco taxes and wasting his mandate through inept rule.
He insists it was his replacement, incumbent President Gloria Arroyo, who drove the Southeast Asian nation further into poverty and chaos through corruption.
But, although Ms Arroyo pardoned him in 2007 after he was sentenced to life in jail for graft, Mr Estrada maintains he has been deeply victimised by the nation's elite. -- AFP

Lupit spares Philippines = What a relief !!

Oct 24, 2009

MANILA - THE Philippines breathed a sigh of relief on Saturday as typhoon Lupit, now downgraded into a tropical storm, veered away from the country which is still dealing with the devastation from two previous deadly storms.
Lupit made a sharp turn northwards, away from the main Philippine island of Luzon and was forecast to continue moving northwards, the government weather station said.
As of 4am on Saturday (2000 GMT Friday, 4am Singapore time), Lupit was charted 240km north-east of the northern town of Aparri, it said.
Storm alerts were lowered across the northern part of the country where relief operations had been prepared in anticipation of the arrival of a massive typhoon.
However the weather station warned residents in the north to remain on alert for flashfloods and landslides caused by continued rains in an area where the ground is already saturated from previous storms.
The government had already prepared relief goods and rescue equipment and pre-emptively evacuated more than 2,500 people from vulnerable areas during Lupit's approach. -- AFP

Made in Philippine Ok la - 555 sardine "There is no food worse than the sardine nor an ass worse than a donkey" ?

The importance of the sardine was, and is so great that it was adopted in many proverbs, country and culture. During  my childhood day, I remembered sardine was bill as poor man food, it  once parts  of my army field camp ration like the proverb saying “There is no food worse than the sardine nor an ass worse than a donkey ”
However, it's high time society give  sardine their place and merit  in the world, the simple way in which we do it by eating with our hands and a piece of bread or we cooked sardine mixed it with Chinese "Mee Sua"  good for breakfast ,lunch or dinner. The are many brand of sardine in the market 555 happen to be favorite, like the brand name implied when you open the can they were 5 sardine inside, the sauce is thick and spicy hot, do not have those strong pungent smell like some other brand. No longer is a poor man food, sardine is parts of chef menu ,in Singapore big name franchise like Old Chang Kee had incorporated curry puff sardine in their chain of store. Sardine are rich in minerals can be cooked and consumed in variety of ways like straight out of a canned, grilled, pickled, smoke just to name a few. Made in Philippine Ok la

Typhoon to hit Philippines

Typhoon Lupit was poised to slam into the north coast of the Philippines as the cyclone-devastated nation sought foreign aid to rebuild and to fight a deadly outbreak of disease. -- PHOTO: REUTERS
MANILA - TYPHOON Lupit was poised to slam into the north coast of the Philippines, forecasters said on Thursday, as the cyclone-devastated nation sought foreign aid to rebuild and to fight a deadly outbreak of disease.
After an erratic track over the past few days, the typhoon was set to make landfall with gusts of up to 195kmh, chief government weather forecaster Prisco Nilo told a news conference.
'With the eye so close to land, it is highly unlikely that the typhoon would veer north to Taiwan and spare the Philippines,' he added.
According to the current track given by the weather service, the eye was expected to pass just south of Aparri town on Luzon island's north-east coast around 5am on Friday (2100 GMT on Thursday).
However, Mr Nilo said the typhoon should be over land for no more than 12 hours. 'This should mean comparatively less rainfall,' he added.
Floods, landslides and disease killed 1,050 people over the past month in the wake of tropical storms Ketsana and Parma, and the authorities said nearly 1.3 million people were still living in flooded conditions. Some 200,000 others were stranded at evacuation camps. -- A

Gunmen kidnap 8 workers

Oct 21, 2009

MANILA (Philippines) - ARMED men abducted eight government workers who were protecting a southern Philippine watershed against timber poachers and illegal miners, officials said Wednesday.

The workers were manning a road checkpoint in Anticala village when the seven gunmen abducted them, Gen Ferrer said, adding that their truck also was missing. They were employed by the local government and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to guard the watershed, he said.

too much honey spoil the honey

Like the article stated too much honey spoil the honey, the concept of eating a balanced meal is the key to health. Any good food when eat in large quality can cause more harm than good. Growing up in Singapore I had the advantages of having friends from all races, from my observance certain foods that we  eat also boil down to genetic heritage, like my Indian friends who had no issues for them to eat curry at almost every meals the hotter and spicier the better. The Chinese had the yin and yang, should not take so much of this and not so much of that will cause heatiness and unbalance of the body. On some rare occasion  I will totally agrees with my dads when coming to eating durian during the season. Durian is a Malay and Indonesian name, which the word "DURI" means spine.
Durian has a strong smell and some people don't like this kind of smell. That is why it is prohibited to bring durian fruit on board the taxi, plane. According to my American friend it smell like ammonia shit, although
he would pinch his nose to eat it . Durian is rather heaty and you had to look for other fruit like mangoestin which had a cooling effect on the body and I simply love both , who were argue with that ! In philippine they have fruits like mangoes, star apples, guyabano, tamarine, santol, teranati, camias, papaya, guava, chesa with milk sugar and ice, avocado with sugar milk and ice, pineapples, bananas, pomelo, suha, langka/jackfruit, mabolo, pakwan/watermelon, melon, chico, durian, lansones, isip, rambotan, mangoestin, ebus, calamansi, singkamas, dalandan, ponkan, some of these fruits are completely unknown to me. Bottom line apply some common sense approach in eating fruit or food.

Philippine principal abducted

ZAMBOANGA (Philippines) - SUSPECTED Muslim extremists abducted a school principal on the southern Philippine island of Jolo, scene of the recent killing of two US soldiers, a military spokesman said on Tuesday.
About a dozen gunmen stopped a minibus carrying officials of the local school in Patikul town on Monday and took principal Gabriel Canizares, 36, Major Ramon David Hontiveros said.
'Mr Canizares was with his co-teachers in the jeep, and he was the only one abducted,' said Maj Hontiveros.
'There is an operation going on to track down Mr Canizares,' he added.
The kidnappers are believed to be members of the Abu Sayyaf, a Muslim extremist group that intelligence agencies have linked to the Al-Qaeda network.

MANILA - THE Philippines began evacuating thousands of people in northern areas prone to floods and landslides on Tuesday ahead of a powerful typhoon that has gained strength over the Pacific, officials said.

Typhoon Lupit, which means 'fierce' in Filipino, was expected to make landfall around the far northern tip of the Luzon region by Thursday and dump more rain on typhoon-weary provinces, said Prisco Nilo, head of the weather bureau. Lupit, a category 4 typhoon with centre winds of 195 kmh and with gusts of up to 230 kmh, was 890 km east of northern Cagayan province, the weather bureau said.
Thousands of residents in northern coastal and mountain areas had started to move to safer areas, said Lieutenant-Colonel Ernesto Torres, spokesman for the national disaster agency.
'Our troops in the field are assisting local government units in the pre-emptive evacuation of disaster-prone areas in the north,' Lt-Col Torres told reporters.

Made in Philippine Ok la - Canned Smoked Oyster

Like most of us  who had this misconception that canned food isn't fresh, food should be fresh as it can get. I had always used to walk straight past canned sea food in the supermarket, However, something caught my eye today  smoke oyster in the shelf and I just simply curious just how were the oyster will able to stand up to fresh oyster. What a surprised ! when I  open the canned the oyster was about an inch in size quite a healthy and generous serving of 14 oyster. For many, many centuries, oysters have been considered one of the greatest aphrodisiacs. In other words, they are said to increase one’s sexual desire upon consumption I guess you need to consume few hundred to make a work. According to research done by the Food and Drug Administration, all of these supposed sexual effects that are caused by aphrodisiacs, oysters in particular, are based solely on myths and not fact. To date, there is no documented scientific data that proves that foods considered aphrodisiacs, when ingested, cause an increase in sexual desire. The canned Oysters have a clean ocean smell never buy oysters with an odor. Similarly the oyster meats are cream to light brown with ruffled edges and a silky texture. When I fried it with egg, the taste was almost like the real deal. At P44.50 Cheap and Good. Made in Philippine Ok la

Philippines readies evacuations

Oct 19, 2009 MANILA - PHILIPPIINE authorities applied the lessons from recent deadly storms on Monday by stocking up on food and clothes early while moving residents out of harm's way as a powerful typhoon threatened the country's rain-soaked northeast. Typhoon Lupit, packing winds of 108 miles (175 kilometres) per hour and gusts of up to 130 mph (210 kph), was not expected to make landfall before Thursday, giving officials time to organise food supplies and issue landslide and flood warnings. The government was moving fast to prevent any loss of life after back-to-back storms on Sept 26 and Oct 3 killed more than 850 people. 'These days we no longer have a problem convincing residents to evacuate,' said Loreto Espineli, police chief in Benguet province where 300 people died. Hundreds of families living in danger zones - low-lying areas, near cliffs and mountain slopes - were still in evacuation centers or staying with relatives since Typhoon Parma damaged their homes early this month. They will ride out the latest typhoon in shelters, Mr Espineli said. 'In most houses, one male is left behind just to look after their belongings, and when the typhoon is already near, we will go house-to-house to evacuate everyone,' he said. Village heads were using megaphones to warn about the impending typhoon, and sirens will be sounded once it makes landfall, Mr Espineli told The Associated Press, adding: 'We will force them to leave if they don't want to,' he said. -- AP

Storms death toll up to 850

Oct 19, 2009

Tropical storm Ketsana left 80 per cent of Manila flooded, and affected more than 4 million people. --PHOTO: AP
MANILA - THE death toll from two devastating storms that struck the Philippines over the past month has risen to 858, with ensuing disease outbreaks killing 89 others, the government said on Monday as the latest National Disaster Coordinating Council toll is up from 818 on Sunday.
It said Tropical Storm Ketsana left 420 dead and 37 missing when it flooded 80 percent of Manila on September 26, a disaster the government said affected 4.35 million people.
Some areas are still flooded three weeks later and 189,000 people remain in evacuation centres, it added.
Typhoon Parma hit the northern Philippines on October 3 and lingered as a tropical storm for a week, triggering landslides that killed 438 people and leaving 51 missing mostly in mountain communities.
The government agency said Parma affected 4.16 million people, including more than 32,000 who remain at evacuation centres.
The health department said leptospirosis, a bacterial disease that can lead to kidney failure and is caused by exposure to animal urine in flood waters, later killed at least 89 people. -- AFP

US$1b for storm recovery

The bond offer comes after the government announced that it would have to raise revenues sharply to pay for relief and repairs after tropical storm Ketsana and typhoon Parma. -- PHOTO: AP
MANILA - THE Philippine government announced on Saturday that it successfully raised US$1 billion (S$1.39 billion) in 25-year global bonds amid a growing need for rehabilitation funds after two destructive storms.
This marks the third international global bond issue for the Philippines this year and the first 25-year bond offer since January 2007, the finance department said in a statement.
The bond offer comes after the government announced that it would have to raise revenues sharply to pay for relief and repairs after tropical storm Ketsana and typhoon Parma struck one after another from September 26.
The two storms caused massive flooding in the capital Manila and surrounding areas as well as killer landslides in mountainous areas in the north, resulting in almost 800 deaths and at least 21.6 billion pesos (S$63.8 million) in damage to agriculture and infrastructure.
President Gloria Arroyo's economic aides have expressed concern this week that storm damage may cause the budget deficit this year to shoot past 300 billion pesos.
They see reconstruction costs and slower economic activity as putting pressure on Manila's full-year budget deficit target ceiling of 250 billion pesos, or 3.2 per cent of the projected gross domestic product for the year. -- AFP
