TOUGHER new rules will be employed to deal with businesses which repeatedly flout fire safety regulations.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) will introduce a demerit point system to track repeat fire safety offenders and take appropriate enforcement actions against them.
Speaking at the SCDF annual workplan seminar yesterday, Minister for Law and Second Minister for Home Affairs K. Shanmugam, said that SCDF has seen cases where business operators repeatedly breach safety requirements despite 'being hauled to court and fined numerous times'.
'These proposals aim to encourage a change of mindset and to instil self-discipline among business operators,' he said, adding that more about the system will be revealed at a later date.
The announcement comes just a day after Little India mall Mustafa Centre was dealt a court order to stop business on the ground floor for 40 hours.
The order was obtained by the SCDF because Mustafa had failed to fix its overcrowding problem and was a grave fire hazard.
