News Update P1.5 billion worth of shabu-making chemical seized by Customs

MANILA, Philippines – An estimated P1. 5 billion worth of chemicals used in producing metamphetamine hydrochloride or shabu has been confiscated by the Bureau of Customs (BOC), an official disclosed today.

BOC Commissioner Lito Alvarez said that 32 drums of shabu-making chemical was discovered during the scanning procedures by the agency’s personnel.

"A drum contains 200 liters of the chemical and based on the estimate of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, the contraband would be worth P1.5 billion," Alvarez said in a radio interview.

He said it was the biggest haul in the history of illegal drug confiscated by the BOC.

Alvarez said authorities have already identified the owner of the shipment, which came from China. - By Dennis Carcamo
