alacañang and the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration on Saturday warned the public against a hoax text message about a tsunami alert in Cagayan province, which was battered by Typhoon Mina (Nanmadol).
"PAGASA did not issue any tsunami warning. It is not within our mandate. Furthermore there is no reported submarine earthquake," PAGASA-DOST said in its Twitter account.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, which like PAGASA is under the Department of Science and Technology, is the agency mandated to issue such warnings.
Malacañang appealed to the public not to believe such hoaxes.
"Please be informed that PAGASA has not issued any tsunami alert. The circulating SMS about a PAGASA tsunami alert is a hoax," the Official Gazette said in its Twitter account.
"Text circulating that @dost_pagasa has issued a tsunami alert in Cagayan is FALSE. No such thing!" said deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte.
