News Update Philippines arrests suspect in attack on governor

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Philippine police say they have arrested a suspect in a car bomb attack that killed two people but missed a governor traveling in a violent southern region.

Maguindanao Gov. Esmael Mangudadatu took office after many of his relatives were slain in the country's worst political massacre in 2009.

Sultan Kudarat police chief Danilo Peralta said Thursday that authorities arrested the suspect after a witness saw him leaving the bomb-laden car and fleeing the scene of Monday's attack in Tacurong City.

Police say a howitzer round in the car blew up and struck a vehicle in Mangudadatu's passing convoy, killing an official and a passer-by and wounding six others.

Police are looking for a second man who was also seen leaving the car before it exploded.
