CHANGI Airport can trace some of its roots to the Logan International Airport in Boston, Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew revealed on Wednesday.
He said his observations from having flown in and out of the busy airport when he was at Harvard University helped him when a decision had to be made on expanding Singapore's airport at Paya Lebar or having a new one at Changi.
The airport story was one of three personal examples he used to underline the importance of lifelong learning and being open to the experience of others.
MM Lee explained that his experiences in places such as the United States and Britain when he was in his 20s helped him shape modern Singapore.
Boston's airport, for instance, showed him the benefits of having an airport in which aircraft took off and landed over water.
'I found that they had their planes land over water and take off over water. So there was no footprint of the sound of the aircraft over the city,' he said at a dialogue with participants of the Singapore National Employers Federation CEO and Employer's Summit.
