He said after a shareholders meeting on Tuesday: 'It is at the mercy of the board but I am getting on in years, I should move on. And as one shareholder has said, my hair has all gone grey....I think the process of renewal in the leadership should take place.'

The board is looking for a replacement and has shorlisted 'several' candidates both within and outside the airline, said chairman Stephen Lee, without elaborating.

Industry observers said potential in-house successors are Mr Bey Soo Khiang, senior executive vice-president (marketing and corporate services), as well as the carrier's three executive vice-presidents; Ng Chin Hwee, Mak Swee Wah and Goh Choon Phong.

Mr Chew joined SIA in 1972 and took over the captain's seat in June 2003. His current contract as CEO expires at the end of the year.
