CATBALOGAN CITY (PIA) - Catbalogan farmers are slowly withdrawing from commercial fertilizers as the Office of the City Agriculturist pushes for organic.
In an interview with City Agriculturist Ruth Dasal, she said that the Department of Agriculture (DA) has afforded Catbalogan with a shredder now housed in this city's community-based vermin-composting facility located in Barangay New Mahayag.
While the local government unit (LGU) here provided the structure as its counterpart.
The facility is composed of several beds of concrete bins where the composting activity is arranged into phases of decomposition.
It is comprised of shredding shed, worm beds, and curing and bagging areas for the finished vermi-cast.
The composting facility also serves as training ground for barangay workers on the entire composting process.
Vermi-composting is recommended in rural areas where the material to be composted is largely agricultural residue, which does not harm the earthworms.
The assistant of the city agriculturist, Daniel Daguman, who supervises the facility, said that the organic fertilizer from this facility is being introduced to farmers in Catbalogan.
This is apart from the support the LGU has extended to farmers like free vegetable seeds, subsidized palay seeds, and fertilizers for its people especially in the more remote areas beyond Barangay San Vicente and Mahayag.
The city government has also an on going construction of farm-to-market roads traversing at least seven barangays.
