An inmate of the Cebu Provincial Jail was allegedly mauled to death over his refusal to join a dance practice, a radio report said Saturday.
Radio dzBB's Cebu affiliate reported an investigation is now underway to verify the cause of death of inmate Angelito Cabalquinto.
Cabalquinto died Wednesday from head injuries, with initial examinations indicating he had been hit with hard objects.
Officials at the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) said, however, that Cabalquinto was hanging his clothes when he lost his balance, hit his head and fell unconscious.
But investigators are also looking into whether an inmate had been forcing inmates to join their dance practice and led the alleged mauling.
The CPDRC is home to the “dancing inmates" that gained worldwide fame for their choreographed numbers, which were posted on video sharing site YouTube.
Time placed the inmates' rendition of the Michael Jackson mega-hit Thriller as fifth on its exclusive list that includes global personalities such as Britney Spears and Hillary Clinton.
