News Update Flashflood, twister hit 2 Cebu towns

SANTANDER, Cebu - More than 50 houses were destroyed when flashfloods and a whirlwind triggered by heavy rains overnight hit the towns of Argao and Santander at dawn last Thursday.

The local government units (LGUs) of said towns are still conducting damage assessment although initial reports showed only one person was confirmed injured in the separate incidents which shoot townsfolk.

Santander Vice Mayor Wilson Wenceslao said at least 40 houses were damaged when flashfloods hit three coastal barangays in his town. Although the extent of the flood was not as damaging as the flashflood that hit the town a few years ago, Wenceslao said the town has already fielded disaster officers to assess the damage.

Last year, a flashflood hit five barangays of Santander town, destroying hundreds of houses and public infrastructure, including roads and bridges. Wenceslao, however, said Thursday the extent of damage of the latest flashflood could be minimal.

In Argao town, 10 houses were damaged when a whirlwind hit two barangays at past 2 a.m. on Thursday following a heavy downpour in Barangays Talaga and Balisong, said SPO1 Edwin Miranda.
