News Update Bill Passed for Airport Rehab

CAMOTES ISLAND, Cebu - With the goal of enhancing the tourism potentials of Camotes Island, located north of Cebu, a Cebuano lawmaker has recently passed House Bill 2668 providing for the rehabilitation and modernization of the airport here.

''Camotes Island has much to offer in terms of tourist attractions, but the issue on accessibility has been a concern. With a rehabilitated airport, it can soon accommodate bigger aircrafts,'' said Representative Ramon Durano VI (Cebu, 5th district) who made possible the filing of a bill which is ''An Act providing for the rehabilitation, improvement and modernization of the Camotes Airport in the town of San Francisco, Cebu.''

In an interview, Durano said the airport's modernization plans will be under the supervision of the Department of Transportation and Communications (DoTC) and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

The bill also provides for the preparation of feasibility and detailed engineering studies, site evaluation equipment, materials and services to be used directly for the project.

The amount required to carry out the provisions of said proposed bill will be charged to Department of Transportation and Communication appropriations under the General Appropriations Act.

According to Durano, if the bill is enacted into law, supervision and management of the Camotes Airport shall be temporarily placed under the Mactan Cebu International Airport Authority until such time that an independent management body can be created by the local government unit in Camotes, the Provincial Government of Cebu, and the DoTC.
