News Update Mas Selamat back in S'pore

Former Singapore's Jemaah Islamiah leader Mas Selamat Kastari has been released by Malaysia's Internal Security Act and handed him over to the Immigration Department for deportation. -- PHOTO: MINISTRY OF HOME AFFAIRS


TERRORIST leader Mas Selamat Kastari, was brought back to Singapore on Friday, after being released by the Malaysian authorities and handed over to Singapore.
A statement from the Ministry of Home Affairs said that Mas Selamat, who escaped from detention here two years ago, has been arrested under Singapore's Internal Security Act and is currently under investigation.
The ministry also conveyed its deepest appreciation to its Malaysian counterparts for their assistance.
It also acknowledged and thanked Singaporeans for their support and help rendered during the search for Mas Selamat.
Mas Selamat, the leader of the Singapore Jemaah Islamiyah terrorist network escaped from Whitley Road Detention Centre on Feb 27, 2008. He was recaptured in Johor last year.
