The Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI) has been
praised for its efforts in engaging non-Chinese communities here.
Speaking at the chamber's annual Chinese New Year celebrations on Sunday,
Senior Minister S. Jayakumar commended the group for maintaining excellent bonds
within Singapore's multiracial society.
He cited examples such as the community engagement taskforce the
SCCCI set up with the Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations
in support of the Government's Community Engagement Programme.
It also organised a career fair in 2006, to offer Malay workers jobs with SCCCI members.
And, since 2004, it has worked with the Yayasan Mendaki self-help group to award four
scholarships a year to outstanding Malay/Muslim undergraduates.
Guests at Sunday's event included SCCCI members, their family members, and
China's ambassador to Singapore, Madam Zhang Xiaokang.
