Kopi talk Transition towns movement

In Singapore we have the the Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize  a biennial international award to recognise individuals and organisations that have made outstanding contributions to the creation of vibrant, liveable and sustainable urban communities around the world and the sharing of best practices in urban solutions among cities. In Philippine they have the transition initiatives with the primary goal of making communities aware of the challenges of climate change, and the world's reliance on oil

In Gamu Isabela we are still waiting for the government water, I just sick of pumping my shi@t ass for water even though we have a pump, Ironically, the typhoon is causing the blackout. My father used to enlightened me with all the planing within the plan, but guess who going to do it, nobody. arrg !! Hopefully, myrfnt you are right by saying that the nation may be said to be in a transition stage at this point in time - a transition from a deaf government to a government that listens; from a corrupted bureaucracy to a transparent government; from a wounded people to a healed land; from an environment bleeding for life to one that is sustainable and vibrant.

What is a transition town? The transition towns concept began in Ireland in 2006, with the primary goal of making communities aware of the challenges of climate change, and the world's reliance on oil. Through the years, the term transition towns had began to be known as transition initiatives, ''to reflect the range and type of communities involved - villages, suburbs, to council districts to cities and city boroughs.'' Inside the transition initiative, local communities are encouraged to participate in the formulation of plans and projects that seek to reduce energy usage and fuel consumption in communities.

At the heart of the transition initiative concept is promoting the idea that a world free from oil dependence is far better and far more fulfilling than what we have today. ''...by shifting our mind set we can actually recognize the coming post-cheap oil era as an opportunity rather than a threat, and design the future low-carbon age to be thriving, resilient, and abundant - somewhere much better to live than our current alienated consumer culture based on greed, war, and the myth of perpetual growth.'' (Transition Town Westcliff website).

We recall having written about creative cities in the Philippines (September 13, 2006) that became recipients of the League of Cities of the Philippines Best Practices Award. In the article we emphasized the need for local officials to harness the talents of their constituents and to upgrade the standard and quality of public service that the citizens need. This transition town or transition initiative concept is another novel concept we may link with creative governance and environmental protection. Leaders, both local and national, should come to realize the urgent need for every nation and every community to unite efforts to reduce harmful emissions from the use of fuel and oils and work towards gradually eliminating the impacts of climate change.

The nation may be said to be in a transition stage at this point in time - a transition from a deaf government to a government that listens; from a corrupted bureaucracy to a transparent government; from a wounded people to a healed land; from an environment bleeding for life to one that is sustainable and vibrant. We bring forward the idea of transition towns/initiatives with the hope that the leaders of the country will finally put the environment first in their agenda. For after all, a healthy planet means a healthy human race. (E-mail address: myrfnt@yahoo.com)
