News Update Governor Pineda, 6 Pampanga mayors defend GMA

SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga - Six mayors in the second district of Pampanga, along with the provincial governor, stood as a group today to defend former President and Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo from insinuations made by President Benigno Aquino III that their towns were recipients of calamity funds in "shocking quantities" toward the end of the Arroyo administration.

The mayors said several years of follow-up with the former Arroyo administration resulted in the approval by the Department of Budget of Management (DBM) of some P105 million in mostly flood-control projects in their flood-prone barangays, but the DBM has not released any of these funds yet.

The said municipal mayors include Eduardo D. Guerrero of Floridablanca, Mylyn Pineda of Lubao, Ricardo Rivera of Guagua, Yolanda M. Pineda of Sta. Rita, Condralito P. de la Cruz of Porac and Josefina C. Leoncio of Sasmaun

Mayor Pineda of Lubao, who speak for the group, told reporters that although their constituents need these projects badly because of the rainy season, they are willing to forego these funds if President Aquino thinks he could use the money for some other priority projects.

For her part, Pampanga Gov. Lilia Pineda defended former President Arroyo from insinuations that a particular district in Pampanga has benefited immensely from the calamity funds.

President Aquino was quoted as saying, "It seems there was a particular district that benefited but was not affected by Ondoy. Twenty-percent of the funds allegedly went to the particular district."

The governor said the facts will show that projects in the six towns in Rep. Arroyo’s district were still waiting for release of funds from the DBM when President Aquino took over, and should his government decide to withhold the money, he could do so.
