News update P187 million for Baguio garbage solution

BAGUIO CITY - The city government has earmarked P187 million to jumpstart the sanitary landfill project and the construction of more materials recovery facilities (MRFs) to address the city's solid waste problem.

Mayor Mauricio G. Domogan said bulk of the amount was previously allotted for the purchase of land and the partial construction of the sanitary landfill in the Sto. Tomas Apugan area while part of it will be utilized for the setting up of additional MRFs.

Domogan said more national and international support is being received by his office for the city to realize the establishment of a permanent sanitary landfill.

He said this problem must be solved at the soonest to help liven up tourism in this City of Pines.

The local government plans to construct the engineered sanitary landfill in a three-hectare city-owned property in Barangay Sto. Tomas Apugan upon the issuance of a social acceptability certificate by the host communities so that the required feasibility for the project will already commence within the next few months.

Domogan said the establishment of MRFs in clusters of the city barangays will greatly help in reducing the huge volume of waste being hauled to the sanitary landfill in Capas, Tarlac that has eaten up a huge portion of the city's budget over the past several years so that such expensive hauling will be stopped within the next two months.

Earlier, Baguio Representative Bernardo M. Vergara and Domogan crafted a four-pronged approach in order to satisfactorily address the city's garbage problem that has plagued the city residents over the past two and a half years.

Aside from starting the construction of the engineered sanitary landfill, the two officials want that sufficient funds will be utilized from the P187 million to extend the retaining wall of the Irisan dumpsite which will serve as a temporary disposal area for residual waste while awaiting the completion of the landfill facility.

Moreover, the city government will purchase state-of-the-art units of equipment which will be used in the existing MRFs in order to increase their processing capacity for biodegradable waste thereby slowly reducing the waste being hauled to the Tarlac landfill.

Domogan asserted the need to construct more MRFs in other clusters of barangays so that the facilities will be operational by the need of the year to strengthen the city's solid waste disposal problem and will help bring back the cleanliness of the city thereby resulting in the influx of more tourists that could increase economic activities.
