GUANGZHOU - IT WAS the first Singapore school to set up a campus in Beijing and now it's first again in Guangzhou.

On Wednesday, Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) inked a memorandum-of-understanding with Guangzhou authorities and Temasek-owned SingBridge International Singapore to develop a school in the Sino-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City.

The MOU signing was witnessed by Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, who also officiated at the groundbreaking ceremony of the Knowledge City.

The new partnership will see the HCI partnering a top Guangzhou school - to be picked by the Guangzhou Knowledge City's Education Department - for exchange and mutual learning programmes.

Guangzhou will also use HCI's Integrated Programme as a benchmark to prepare its own students and learn from the Singapore school's best practices in academic programme, administration, teacher training and course management. Mr Desmond Ong, chairman of HCI's board of governors, said the collaboration is an endorsement of the school's Integrated Programme and that it will allow Singapore students to better understand China's current and future economic development.
