DAVAO CITY -- The driver of the bus that rammed into a taxicab along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City, killing the cab's passenger, voluntarily surrendered to Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte here Thursday night.
The suspect identified as Daniel Espinosa, 40, driver of Universal Bus Company and a native of purok 16, Concordo Compound, Toril, this city, is now in the custody of the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) and will be flown back to Manila around 6 p.m. Friday, said television reports.
Espinosa surrendered to Duterte around 7 p.m. Thursday with the help of his relatives from Toril.
He said in an interview that he went to the house of the vice mayor to show that he is ready to face all the charges related to the death of veteran journalist and University of the Philippines Prof. Lourdes "Chit" Estella-Simbulan.
"Kagahapong adlawa (Huwebes) miadto mi sa balay ni Vice Mayor Rody Duterte dayon pagkagabii, ila kung gidala sa iyang opisina sa Sangguniang Panlungsod (We went to Vice Mayor Rody Duterte's house yesterday, and they brought me to his office at the City Council)," Espinosa said in an interview Friday with Sun.Star SuperBalita and dxRA Radyo Arangkada.
The driver said that Simbulan was onboard a taxi along Philcoa, Quezon City around 6 p.m. of May 13 when the bus he was driving smashed into the cab, causing the journalist's death.
