DAGUPAN CITY, Pangasinan - The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Regional Office opened an Independence Day Jobs Fair yesterday in which a total of 5,700 domestic and foreign jobs were being offered. The jobs fair will last until today at the Nepo Mall in Dagupan City to accommodate Pangasineneses coming from far-flung barangays to help them find employment. MORE POWERS TO BARANGAYS EYED
BALANGA CITY, Bataan - To make the barangay system more effective in local cases, a former secretary of the Department of Justice (DOJ) is proposing that more powers be vested on barangay captains under the Barangay Justice System for the swift disposition of cases and avoid disputes from reaching the courts. Silvestre Bello III, who served in the Cabinets of former presidents Corazon Aquino and Fidel V. Ramos, said barangay captains must have coercing powers by citing in contempt respondents in community cases who fail or refuse to heed barangay summons. Bello's position received popular approval among officers and members of the Bagong Simula Pilipinas Movement (BSPM) during their meeting in Balanga City last weekend. (Mar T. Supnad)
LOS BAÑOS TOPS IN GOVERNANCE
LOS BAÑOS, Laguna - This so-called Special Science and Nature City of the Philippines ranked No. 1 this year in the implementation of the Local Government Performance Management System (LGPMS) among 26 municipalities in this province, the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) said yesterday. DILG-Municipal Local Government Operations Officer Olivo Esquivel handed the award to Mayor Anthony Genuino and LGU department heads in simple ceremonies led by DILG Provincial Director Lionel Dalope at the Municipal Covered Court last June 4. ANGELES SETS JUNE 15 HOLIDAY
ANGELES CITY, Pampanga - It is a non-working holiday in this city on June 15 to commemorate the resiliency of the people during the Mt. Pinatubo eruption in 1991. The Sangguniang Panlungsod of Angeles recently passed an ordinance declaring June 15 as a citywide holiday. The city council said the passage of PO 688-12 was meant "to painfully remember the devastation and at the same time give tribute to the resiliency of Angeleños to rise from the calamity." RIZAL CELEBRATES
ANTIPOLO CITY, Rizal - The sound of drums beating went on as the street dancing competition drew a huge crowd the other day at the Capitol, here, for the 111th Araw ng Lalawigan ng Rizal celebration. The participants had themes like the Sinulog Festival of Cebu and Ati-Atihan Festival in Aklan, drawing cheers from the crowd at the first Sining, Kultura at Turismo (SIKAT) Festival 2012 which aimed to highlight the arts, culture and tourism of the residents and the province. Earlier, Rizal Governor Casimiro "Jun" Ynares III led provincial officials in honoring several outstanding Rizaleños who are achievers in their respective field of endeavor with the Gawad Anak ng Lahing Bayani (ALAB) ng Rizal award.
The awardees for this year's ALAB ng Rizal Award were Dr. Minerva Ninonuevo of Tanay for education; Engr. Bonifacio de Lumen of Taytay for Management; former Congressman Gilberto "Bibit" Duavit of Binangonan for Public Service; and UP Emeritus Professor Ligaya Tiamson-Rubin of Angono for Education and Writing.
