MANILA, Philippines – A suspected ranking official of the New People’s Army has been apprehended recently in Bacolod City, a military spokesman disclosed today.
Army spokesman Lt. Col. Ernesto Torres Jr. identified the suspect as Romulo Bito-on, reportedly a member of the Komiteng Rehiyon-Negros of the NPA.
Military intelligence operatives also said that Bito-on has held numerous key positions in the armed movement, including head of the cultural and propaganda bureau, and deputy secretary of the education bureau.
Reports reaching the Army headquarters in Manila said that soldiers from the 303rd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division nabbed Bito-on last Apr. 5 in Bacolod City by virtue of a warrant for arson.
The suspect is now detained at the Bacolod City Police Station. - By Dennis Carcamo
