News Update Cebu Pushes 'Green Jewelry'

EBU CITY - A group of fashion accessories exporters in Cebu is banking on the "green jewelry" trademark to attract more foreign orders, after seeing an improvement in the global economic landscape. The Fashion Accessories Manufacturers and Exporters Foundation in Cebu (Cebu-FAME) is leveraging on its eco-friendly fashion accessories items, a product considered to be "recession proof," said the group's president Janet Chua. Cebu-FAME has started its advocacy to stress the "Green Tag" of its products exported abroad, thus positioning Cebu as Asia's Destination for Green Jewelry. "We see the need to promote strongly our environment-friendly fashion accessories because international buyers now are fast becoming environment-conscious, especially after the recession.

Exporters here are seeing this as a niche for Cebu products," Chua said in an interview. According to Chua, even before the "green revolution" became a trend worldwide, Cebu's fashion accessories makers have already been producing environment-friendly items in the last 40 years. Chua said that aside from the industry's business interests, the players are also concerned about preserving the environment. "We want Cebu to become Asia's destination for green jewelry. That's why we are taking the big step forward by greening the environment and preserving it, because that's where we are getting the raw materials," she said.
