News Update Capiz barangays flooded

ROXAS CITY, Capiz, Philippines (PNA) - Roxas City has not been spared from flash floods that hit Capiz province after heavy rains that fell for the past three successive days here. Twenty-two barangays in Roxas City affected by flash floods have been placed under a state of calamity. The City Council approved the recommendation of the City Social Welfare and Development Office declaring said barangays under a state of calamity. These barangays include Culasi, Baybay, Dumulog, Cogon, Punta Cogon, Gabuan, Culajao, Bolo, Lanot, Lonoy, San Jose, Jumagicjic, Li-ong, Adlawan, Sibaguan, Dinginan, Loctugan, Bago, Cabugao, Olutayan, Libas and Barra located in coastal and fishpond areas. Under the calamity status, affected barangays can use their calamity fund reserves for affected families who lost their source of livelihood as an aftermath of floods. In Roxas City, some 2,710 families were affected and 480 hectares of farmlands submerged under flood waters. The Capiz Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) reported that the number of barangays affected by the massive floods that hit the province reached 138. The municipalities of Panit-an and Dao topped the list having the most number of barangays affected by the devastating floods with 20 barangays each, followed by Pan-ay with 18 barangays submerged in flood waters. Other affected municipalities also include Sigma, Mambusao, Pontevedra, Maayon, Cuartero, Jamindan, Sapian, Ivisan, Dumarao and Tapaz. Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia formally inaugurated the improved Level III Waterworks System in Barangay Poblacion, this town.

Town Mayor Teresito P. Mariñas assisted the Governor during the event, with Carmen Vice Mayor Al Silvestre Damiles also in attendance. The augmentation of the waterworks started in January and was finished in May this year with a total cost of around P6 million. The provincial government provided the funding for the entire project. Mariñas said his constituents were very pleased upon seeing the dramatic improvement of their water services. He added that the water system has already served nine contiguous barangays in his town, namely, Luhod, Maghanoy, Maigang, San Rafael, Guibuangan, Boloc-boloc, Poblacion, Luhod and Gunting. (Mars W. Mosqueda Jr.) NEW TACLOBAN HOTEL OPENS TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte, Philippines - A 25-room hotel is undergoing construction beside the San Juanico Golf and Country Club in Barangay Camansihay here. Once open, the new hotel is intended to accommodate the growing demand for accommodations by increasing numbers of visitors and tourists coming to Eastern Visayas, including this capital city of Region 8. Victor A. Domingo, President of the San Juanico Golf and Country Club, speaking told media during the "Meet The Press" forum here that the new hotel, which is expected to be done within the year, will give visitors to Tacloban a safe and comfortable place to stay in while in the city. He said the new hotel will also provide those wanting to play golf in the San Juanico Golf and Country Club's newly-opened 18-hole golf course a place to stay in where they can enjoy a panoramic view of the famous San Juanico bridge.
