News Update Philippine MWSS eyes P3.2-M cloud seeding mission

Despite state weather forecasters' warnings the mission may not work perfectly, the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System is working out a P3.2-million cloud-seeding operation this week in hopes of easing up water shortage in Metro Manila.

MWSS acting chief Macra Cruz said she is working out the details with concessionaires Maynilad and Manila Water, particularly on where to rent the plane for the operation.

"We are closely coordinating with the Bureau of Soils, mag-hire ng aircraft, naghahanap na pwede gamitin para sa seeding (We are closely coordinating with the Bureau of Soils. Our priority is to hire an aircraft that can be used for cloud seeding)," Cruz said in an interview on dzBB radio.

She said the aircraft can be from the military or private sector.

"It will cost us P3.2 million initially," she said.

But the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration warned cloud-seeding may not work perfectly.

Pagasa forecaster Elvie Enriquez said the rains from seeded clouds may not always fall on the target watershed.
