QUEZON CITY, Philippines – A fire broke out in Quezon City on Monday afternoon, destroying an estimated 100 houses, authorities said.
The blaze occurred along Abby Road in Barangay Bagbag, Sauyo.
There were no casualties but around 200 families lost their homes, said Quezon City Fire Marshall Superintendent Bobby Barredo.
Residents tried to help put out the fire by forming a water brigade but Barredo said this only hampered the movement of firefighters.
In a huge fire like this, the residents should have just allowed firefighters to do their jobs, he added.
He said they also had difficulty going to the site because of narrow roads in the community. Only mini-firetrucks were able to get through.
The fire was declared under control around 2:50 p.m.
Some of those who have lost their homes are now picking through the remains of the fire to see if there is anything left they could save.
