News Update Farmers stage lightning rally in front of Aquino home in QC

Militant farmers slipped past security and staged a lightning rally Tuesday morning in front of the house of President Benigno Aquino III in Quezon City.

Radio dzBB's Allan Gatus reported the farmers brought a "seal" of what they called the "Republika ng Hacendero" (Republic of Landowners) during their rally.

No violence between the farmers and Quezon City police and presidential guards was initially reported.

The farmers included members of the Kilusang Mambubukid ng Pilipinas, Southern Luzon-based Kasama-TK, and farmers from Hacienda Luisita in Tarlac. The report, however, did not mention how many farmers were present in the rally.

During the protest action, the farmers threw eggs at the seal of the "Republika ng Hacendero."

On Monday, members of Kasama-TK held a protest in front of the Department of Agrarian Reform office in Quezon City where they threw tomatoes at a mock seal of the Republic, featuring a yellow ribbon, to protest the Aquino government's failure at genuine land reform.

Tuesday's protest came days before Aquino is to mark his first 100 days in office later this week. — RSJ,
