A 20-YEAR-OLD Singaporean medical student, died on Thursday after being dragged for more than a kilometre by a hit-and-run driver.
The female student, who has not been formally identified, was mown down outside the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, an upmarket area of North London at about 2am, The Daily Mail reported.
She was found suffering serious injuries 1.5km away, outside the home of a former French rugby international. Paramedics were unable to save her and it is believed she died on her birthday. According to The Daily Mail, police said it was possible that the driver was not aware he or she hit the victim. The victim's handbag was found 150m from the body, outside Belsize Park Tube station.
The police were examining CCTVs to track down the driver. A resident in the area said that police thought the student might have been hit by a truck. Police also examined footage from a shop near the station which showed a black saloon car suddenly braking around the time of the incident.
The police also cordoned off a section of road stretching over a kilometre. A resident, Rosalind Turner-Wellman, told The Daily Mail: 'There is obviously more to this than a normal hit-and-run because they have cordoned off so much of the road.'
When contacted, an officer from Metropolitan Police Service told the straitstimes.com that police were in the process of verifying the identity of the victim and notifying her next-of-kin.
