CEBU CITY - An official from the Region 7 office of the Department of Education (DepEd) is urging local government units (LGUs) here to hire additional public school teachers this school year as Central Visayas has been found to require over 5,000 teachers to augment its current work force.
"We are again encouraging our LGUs here to help us employ additional public school teachers so that we can somehow address the shortage both in the elementary and public school levels," said Recaredo Borgonia, DepEd7 Regional Director.
Borgonia bared that for the province of Cebu alone, DepEd lacks 2,626 teachers both in the elementary and high school levels where there are likewise a shortage of 1,674 classrooms.
In Bohol, the DepEd official disclosed that 1,606 teachers will also be needed while Negros Oriental lacks 1,217 and Siquijior, 112 teachers.
Borgonia also added that aside from the shortage of teachers the region also lacks classrooms to ,accommodate the increasing number of students enrolled every year.
"For the four provincial districts in Central Visayas, we need around 3,500 classrooms to comfortably accommodate our public school students," he said.
Meanwhile, in line with the opening of the classes next month, the DepEd7 official is also pushing for the wider implementation of the Brigada Eskwela Plus, wherein parents, teachers, students and private institutions are encouraged to join hands in cleaning classrooms not only before the official start of the classes but during the entire school year as well.
