News Update OIC gets MILF, MNLF nod for Mindanao peace

The influential Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) squeezed from two Philippine secessionist groups a commitment to work together for peace in Mindanao.

OIC Secretary General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu had arranged a meeting for chairmen from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) at the sidelines of an OIC meet last Tuesday, the OIC said Friday.

"The Chairmen of the two fronts, Prof. Nur Misuari, Chairman of MNLF, and Haj Murad Ibrahim, Chairman of MILF, have agreed to enhance the cooperation and coordination among them, and to create a mechanism for that purpose with the technical help from the OIC General Secretariat. A second meeting between them will be held in the near future to lay down the details of that mechanism," the OIC said in its website.

According to the OIC, the meeting sought to "enhance coordination between the two fronts and unite their ranks for the peace and development of the Bangsamoro people."

It said the meeting was held last Tuesday in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, on the sidelines of the 37th Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers.

Senior officials of the OIC in charge of Muslim Minorities issues were present at the meeting, the OIC said.

"The Secretary General promised to render any needed assistance for the holding of this meeting," the OIC said.

The MILF noted that Tuesday's meeting was the first time an MILF chairman headed a delegation to the OIC conference.

It said that since 1975, Misuari has always headed the delegation to the 57-strong Pan-Islamic body.

But the MILF also took digs at the MNLF, saying Misuari, accompanied by one colleague, entered the session very late.

"Their identification cards (IDs) were issued after the opening session had started. On the other hand, the MILF delegation got their IDs from the OIC protocol officers the night before the conference," it said in its website.

Misuari was only allowed to address the conference very briefly, it added. — LBG
