News update Mining firm expends P94 million for environment programs

SAN FERNANDO, Cebu - The Taiheiyo Cement Philippines Inc. and Solid Earth Development Corporation (TIPC-SEDC) in this town has spent close to P94 million for its various environmental protection and enhancement programs (EPEP) from 2005 to 2009. EPEP is the operational link between environmental protection and enhancement commitments of mining firms which is also the description of the expected and considered acceptable impacts that shall set environmental protection and enhancement strategies based on best practices in environmental management in mining.

Moreover, the firm has also spent around R4.374 million worth of livelihood projects, infrastructure assistance and educational and medical programs as part of its commitment for responsible mining. It can be recalled that just recently, the TIPC-SEDC has hosted a mine tour activity intended to engage members of the tri-media and other civil society groups in a discussion of the company's thrust in environment protection. Mines and Geosciences Bureau 7 Regional Director Loreto B. Alburo bared that all operating mines and quarries are mandated to put priority attention in developing a self-help and self-reliant community through social development and management programs.

TIPC-SEDC has an approved total area of 1,581.1714 hectares covering Barangays Tinubdan, Tonggo and Bugho in this town with a disturbed area of 40 hectares. The company produces limestone and siliceous clay materials while its milling operations produces pozzolan, premium and portland cement, using the conventional method of open cut mining.
