Police in the northern Philippine province of Nueva Ecija have started investigating the ambush-killing of a publisher in the province last weekend — the third media killing under the Aquino administration.
Radio dzRH reported that as of Wednesday morning, police are still looking for leads on the suspects and motive behind the killing of Edilberto Cruz.
Cruz was the publisher-editor of local newspaper "Salida," which published its latest issue before the May 10 elections.
Provincial police chief Senior Superintendent Ricardo Marquez said they are still looking for information and leads on the killing.
Initial investigation showed Cruz was on his way home in Cabanatuan City aboard his motorcycle (CU-5359) Sunday when a gunman shot him several times.
He died while undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital.
Cruz was the third media worker to be killed under the Aquino administration.
Last July 3, Radyo Natin Tabuk reporter-commentator Jose Daguio, 75, was shot dead in his home in Tabuk in Kalinga province — the first media fatality under Aquino's watch.
A week later, Bicol broadcaster Miguel Belen was shot and wounded in an ambush. Belen died last weekend at a Bicol hospital.
