News Update Casinos collect $70m in levies

THE two integrated resorts have collected $70 million in casino entry levies since they opened, said Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports Vivian Balakrishnan.

Six MPs tabled questions on the integrated resorts over the last two days, asking about the impact of the new casinos on the society and economy.

Dr Balakrishnan, Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry S. Iswaran and Minister of State for Manpower Lee Yi Shyan took turns to respond to the various queries.

On the social impact, Dr Balakrishnan said: 'The Government will continue to monitor the situation with the introduction of the IRs. Should social problems arise, we will consider taking steps to address them.' He added that it is 'still too early' to assess the social impact of the casinos as t they have just opened.

On jobs, Mr Lee told the House that the two IRs now employ some 16,000 workers, with local hires accounting for 70 per cent.
