A SINGAPOREAN group of restauranteurs, led by International Enterprise Singapore, is in London for a first-ever business mission to promote Singaporean food in the UK.

The delegation, made up of local food stalwarts Old Chang Kee, Sakae Sushi, Palm Beach Seafood and Wild Rocket, will study the London market's casual dining scene from May 13 to 19.

Says Wild Rocket owner and chef Willin Low, 'Like the melting pot society Singapore is, Singapore foods bring out the best of the East and West, be these Indian, Chinese, or Eurasian, and kick these up a few notches.'

In fact, Singapore restaurants are becoming more noticed - in the recent San Pellegrino World's Top 50 Best Restaurants, Singaporean restaurants Iggy's and Jaan's were featured, Singapore being one of only two Asian countries in the list - the other being Japan.

The UK is typically seen as the food capital of Europe, and a showcase for new dining concepts and culinary trends. South-east Asian cuisine is one of the fastest growing categories amongst Londoners between 20 and 40, a trend sparked by a combination of increased foreign travel and a growth in cooking and lifestyle programmes. Said IE Singapore's Lifestyle Business Group Director Mr Tan Soon Kim, 'It is timely that IE Singapore takes the lead to open doors for Singapore companies in London. Londoners are getting increasingly adventurous with their foods and are hungry for new dining concepts. Our restaurant operators who are able to fuse conceptual flair, good quality and interesting dining concepts have a distinct advantage of succeeding.'
