Kopi talk Honesty and corruption

Thanks Chaff for the article you are right to point out that countries such as Japan, China, South Korea, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia, indicting and incarcerating officials need not be confined to public officials and bureaucracy but can include Chairmen and CEOs from private conglomerates as well as former religious personnel, Presidents and military generals who have been accused of bribery, corruption, extravagance, price fixing, and other forms of graft.

Two powerful forces: selfishness and greed fan the flame of corruption in any society or country. There are no natural disaster that is capable of compelling any nation other than artificial disaster called corruption. Returning hate for hate is dastard but returning honesty for corruption is divine.

Now that the Arroyo administration is no longer an election issue and the "bete noir," and the shrill Gloria-bashing is temporarily de-escalating, attention is now directed at searching for honest men to run the new Aquino government upon whose success or failure will determine the rise and fall of President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III.With anti-corruption as its centerpiece, just as it was with the Corazon Aquino, Fidel V. Ramos, Joseph Ejercito Estrada, and Gloria Macapagal Arroyo regimes, respectively, President Benigno Aquino III must show dramatic and early results to maintain his credibility and fortitude.

If anti-corruption is his main mantra, and honesty is the primary qualification for employment, President Aquino's frontliners, before they are put out to sea to catch the "big fish," must have consistent track records of honesty, and unassailable integrity and courage.Hence, other than the biggest fish of them all, others will be a disappointment to the general public, and a waste of time. On the other hand, in countries such as Japan, China, South Korea, Thailand, and Malaysia, indicting and incarcerating officials need not be confined to public officials and bureaucracy but can include Chairmen and CEOs from private conglomerates as well as former Presidents and military generals who have been accused of bribery, corruption, extravagance, price fixing, and other forms of graft.

It follows, since the eradication of corruption is the road that he wishes to travel, that President Benigno Aquino needs to carefully budget his time between moving the economy forward, bring peace to Mindanao, and empower the poor, and bringing the circus to town by, say, prosecuting President Arroyo and members of her family and beneficial friends. When this happens, it will be a wasteful exercise and time consuming, and easier said than done.

It is certain that Congresswoman Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, and what is left of her political party, will be prepared for this eventuality and consequences. No doubt that as her term of office approaches the end, the primary aim of President Arroyo is to insure her survival in politics and the preservation of her family interests rather than speculate on the Prime Ministership - a remote possibility - or

Speakership which is as good as lost.On the other hand, with the Marcoses back in the limelight with their fortune intact, and President Joseph Estrada performing a hat-trick by nearly winning the Presidency, and near spectacular upset, President Benigno Aquino III will have his hands full with the Opposition led by Congresswoman Gloria Arroyo. When all is said and done, incoming President-elect Benigno Aquino III has, so far, dwelt on trivia and pedestrian issues. He has not hinted or visualize his vision for the Philippines six years hence, or his big ticket reforms that will dramatically transform Philippine society and the economy which are being awaited by the people with great anticipation and impatience.Needless to say, President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III brings with him new hope and captivating aura that he must translate into actual and visible accomplishments - soonest. You be the judge.
