News Update Dengue cases rise in Kidapawan City — health official

KIDAPAWAN CITY — Amid aggressive drive against dengue, the city’s sanitary inspector on Wednesday confirmed the rise of cases during the first five months of this year.

City health sanitary inspector Gloria Mondejar said they have recorded 192 dengue cases so far compared to 87 in the same period last year. "This is alarming that is why the city health office is intensifying its campaign against dengue in all 40 villages of the city," Mondejar said. According to her, a resident here with dengue fever had died due to complications from other diseases. With a total of 337 reported dengue virus infections in 2009, the city health office recorded only one death, said Mondejar, adding that most badly hit villages are Lanao, Poblacion, Sudapin, Magsaysay and Singao. Mondejar, however, was surprised upon learning that not one single dengue case was reported in Barangay Patadon, a Muslim-dominated village in Kidapawan City. "It is really surprising. City health officials lauded the village officials who work hard in campaigning against dengue in their area," Mondejar said. Health officials appealed to residents in dengue hit-areas to maintain good hygiene and cleanliness in their surroundings to avoid the spread of the disease, even as they encourage the cutting branches of trees and trimming of bushes where dengue-carrying mosquitoes breed. She did not recommend fogging operation as it is only a temporary solution, which could be done if there is dengue outbreak in a given community. "Fogging is not an effective way of containing dengue. It’s the collaborative efforts of the residents within the community in maintaining cleanliness is still the best way to avoid the spread of the deadly disease," Mondejar concluded.

On the other hand, health officials in Negros Occidental in Western Visayas had been alarmed by the remarkable cases of dengue infections in some of the province’s towns.

According to regional health records, the number dengue cases has been up by 148 percent in the first five months of 2010. [See: Negros dengue cases up 148% in 1st 5 months of 2010] — Williamor A. Magbanua/LBG/RSJ
