News update Filipino suspect handed to HK

MANILA - A FILIPINO suspect was handed over to Hong Kong police on Friday to stand trial for the 2003 murders of a American couple in the Chinese territory, Philippine government spokesmen said.

Magno Cruz Manalili was set to be flown to Hong Kong later in the day under police escort, said a spokesman for the National Bureau of Investigation.

Accused of stabbing to death an American couple of Chinese descent in Hong Kong, Manalili fled to the Philippines soon after the April 2003 killings.

He was arrested in the northern Philippines in 2004, but he fought the Hong Kong police's extradition request until he had a change of heart and agreed to be sent to the territory for trial.

Bureau agents told AFP they did not know why Manalili agreed to be extradited now.
They said they were not familiar with the other details of the case. -- AFP
