News update German hotel executive shot dead in Manila

MANILA, Philippines – Police say a gunman has killed a German hotel executive in Manila's Makati financial district.

Chief Supt. Jose Arne delos Santos says an executive assistant manager of the Shangri-la Hotel was shot as he walked near his apartment, close to the hotel.

He says Sergio Mazza died in a hospital Thursday morning from three gunshot wounds to his head.

Police investigators don't think robbery was involved because Mazza's money and belongings weren't taken. They haven't pointed to a motive. Crime is rampant and guns are easily available in the Philippines, but security is tight in Makati, where foreign embassies and multinational companies are located.

German Embassy officials could not be reached for comment. Hotel staff say they will release a statement later.
